New MestizX is a state of mind. Defiantly articulated by queer-Xicanx-feminist writer Gloria E. Anzaldúa in 1987, the New MestizX travels the physical and metaphorical ‘in betweens’ of identity and culture. This exhibition unites visual and performing artists of the Filipinx and Latinx diaspora as they unveil new works exploring the multiplicity of selfhood and cross-cultural identity in the Bay Area. The mix of photography, painting, installations and soundscapes opens on 5/24 at Acción Latina’s Juan R. Fuentes Gallery, with an opening party including food, music and performances not to be missed.
New MestizX opening reception will feature performances from Festival Artists Boondock Squad and INVOCATION: A FRISCOPINX CIPHER by Mister REY.

About Sami Schilf (Sami See)
Sami Schilf is a visual artist and muralist whose work centers in the lived experience of hybridity. As a second generation mestiza (or ‘tisay’ in Tagalog) born in San Francisco, her work plays with the tension between disassociation and reclamation of cultural identity, history, and inheritance.
