Marina Fukushima

Marina Fukushima is a dancer and choreographer based in San Francisco. Born in Tokyo, Japan, she immigrated to the US in 1992. From a cross-cultural perspective, her creative focus is on the themes of silence, family, and intergenerational relationships. She has been developing a Family Project series in primary collaboration with her parents (both visual artists), including the multimedia dance projects Memento Forest — katami (2026), Relative Audience (2023), Family Seasons (2016), and Zoom Dinner (2020). Also, since 2014, in collaboration with Isak Immanuel, the role of constructing somatic-based workshops inclusive to elderly and non-dancers has become a key focus in cultivating a communal process and creative research. Various collaborative intergenerational site-specific dance projects were developed, including Dry Eyes (2020), Festival of Shadows (2019), and Things Evaporate (2018). Ongoing, through movement, her works create a dialogue between the fragile relationships of generations, cultures, and contrasting environments.

Her works have been supported by San Francisco Art Commission, Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, NOHSpace, U.S./Japan Cultural Trade Network, Theatre Bay Area CA$H, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Little Tokyo Service Centerʼs +LAB AIR, and others.
