USAAF 2026 Event - details tbd
“For the Culture” is a performance piece bringing together women Asian American movement artists and organizers from the Bay Area street dance scene. This work examines our layered roles as daughters, mothers, cultural stewards, and leaders in two distinct but mirrored spaces: 1) the traditional family sphere and 2) the multicultural common ground of the street dance community. Inherent to both contexts is a tension between honoring tradition and pushing boundaries. Drawing on art forms such as waacking, krump, locking, and house, we explore the overlap and struggle between responsibility to the collective and caring for oneself.
Through movement and spoken narrative storytelling, we showcase how cultural and familial expectations of the AAPI diaspora can exist in the body in both heavy and generative ways. In East and Southeast Asian communities, there are distinctly gendered ways in which responsibility, duty, and self-sacrifice shape our lives. Collective care is an offering of love. However, it can also be a burden and threat to self-care.
