ISLAND BOUND LISTENING PARTY is a one night, three-part exhibition featuring a screening of this a short dance film by Sami See and a live performance of its original score composed by PINAY VOLTRON.
Audiences will experience ISLAND BOUND, a 15-minute short film exploring the topography of the island body—a way of thinking about embodied solidarity, co-developed by lead artist Sami See and featured Filipino/a/x performing artists. The film follows three queer femme diasporic islanders whose stories intertwine to reveal the haunting rage and resilience of island bodies that have survived being bound, displaced, packaged, and sold by corruption. Through underwater dance, roller skating, rope, and aerial art, these queer femme Filipinx artists explore where lovers’ freedoms are bound to each other and to nature.
For three years, artists featured in this film have collaborated to create common ground through movement and respond with urgency to the literal and metaphorical floods rising across the Philippines and many island contexts. All collaborators identify as Asian, Asian American, Black, and/or Indigenous. By centering the wisdom of often exiled and disenfranchised identities—including sex workers, nontraditional experimental artists, LGBTQIA+ folks, and witches, the program explores how power is built outside conservative and religious structures upheld in many Filipino and AAPI communities.
