Youth Rising

APICC is proud to present Youth Rising at GENERATIONS OF POWER, an outdoor showcase of performances taking place at Japantown Peace Plaza on May 14th.

Youth Rising is an outdoor performance piece highlighting the various aspects of Kathak, classical dance from North India. The performance will consist of an opening invocation - Rangmanch - in which the performance space is sanctified through lighting of the diya, ringing of a bell, and the blowing of a conch shell. The piece concludes by paying homage to the Hindu trinity which represents the cycle of life. The second piece is Malkauns Tarana, a signature piece that highlights the pure dance elements of Kathak. A tarana is characterized by rhythmically complex movements with rapid footwork and lightning-fast pirouettes. Both pieces are original compositions of the late kathak maestro, Pandit Chitresh Das, who established a community and a legacy for Indian classical dance in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
