Born in San Francisco, Genny Lim, San Francisco Jazz Poet Laureate, earned a BA and an MA from San Francisco State University. She earned a certificate in broadcast journalism from Columbia University and later worked as a reporter and commentator for CBS News and has authored many poetry collections
