Exploring and celebrating the spirit of African-American and Japanese- American communities amongst racial discrimination, segregation, redevelopment and gentrification, members of Shizue Seigel’s Write Now! Japantown and Write Now! Fillmore writing workshops will read from the Standing Strong! Fillmore and Japantown community anthology.

Legendary San Francisco institutions, Kearny Street Workshop and the Great Star Theater in Chinatown present programs exploring Asian American roots through literature, photography and the stage  during upcoming events this month.

Can’t Stop Cryin’ for America: Black Lives Matter!, a music work dedicated to victims of police brutality and hate crimes this past year, will feature local jazz pianist, Jon Jang, in collaboration with poet performer, Amanda Kemp.  The piece will be organized into seven vignettes, named after each black victim group killed this past year.

Join artist Genny Lim and other performers as they explore the time-space continuum and dark holes as metaphors for change, transformation and existence.  

Beginning on May 19th, A Place of Her Own will showcase its eighth exhibition featuring 20 assemblage artworks.  Curated by artists Cynthia Tom and Maggie Yee, the exhibition will illustrate the imaginations and desires of women through various mediums.  

With the steadily increasing fear of displacement, many artists ask, what is our role and how can we both make space and retain the ones we currently occupy?

Beginning in May, USAAF will be showcasing Aesthetic Blitz (Asian American Women Artists Association) and Waves of the Past (College of Ethnic Studies at SF State).  As products of a few of San Francisco’s long-standing arts and culture programs, they encapture how we see ourselves as people and as artists.
