SoMapagmahal presents two one-day exhibitions in April and May of photography from middle school students of the Galing Bata Afterschool Program at Bessie Carmichael Filipino Education Center! SoMapagmahal is a play on the acronym "SoMa" (South of Market district of San Francisco) and "mapagmahal" (a Tagalog-Filipino adjective describing someone who is loving, caring and empathetic). Mentored since January by select teaching artists with multimedia exercises, field trips and collaborative workshops, youth artists use photography as a tool for self-empowerment and community advocacy. SoMapagamahal culminates in a zine publication, inspiring and celebrating the resilient voices of young emerging artists!
