About the event

USAAF 2026 Event - details TBD!

“Beyond Borders & BPM: Underground Rhythms of Queer Black & AAPI Resistance” is an immersive, accessible dance party and cultural performance showcase, exploring the importance of underground culture and systemically oppressed instruments/music genres in relation to the sociopolitical history of solidarity between Black and AAPI queer and trans communities in the Bay Area.

Beyond Borders & BPM, inspired by the historical solidarity between Black and AAPI in the Bay Area, invites the audience to find universal connection through a richer understanding of the radical underground roots of queer art/nightlife. Featuring original soundscapes by four Queer Black/AAPI/trans/Māhū DJs playing B2B (Back-to-Back), the B2B format is integral to facilitating Common Ground amongst artist communities & beyond. B2B (orig. 1980’s) is a tag-team approach, with two DJs taking turns to mix songs & shape sound together. At its core, the B2B is a unique collaboration between two artists, creating opportunities for unexpected blends, fresh energies, equipment sharing & the challenge of working with sounds or styles that aren’t their own. The DJs will interweave archival sound into their sets, inspired by the cultural/historical contexts of the performers: The Hawaiian Renaissance, Japanese Shibari, Caribbean independence efforts, pre-colonial Indigenous Filipino instruments, Palestinian folk dance.
