APICENTER: Making Waves celebrates positive and innovative hip-hop by four Bay Area Asian-American emcees: Ruby Ibarra, LEX the Lexicon Artist, Chow Mane, and Rudy Kalma. Showcasing a diverse array of sounds, styles, and stories, APICENTER reinvents and rebuilds on what it means to be a modern Asian-American musician. As Asian-American rappers gain mainstream popularity, they face questions of appropriation and staying true to their identities, while also fighting model minority stereotypes and underrepresentation in entertainment. In APICENTER, each performer represents an Asian-American perspective informed by their distinct backgrounds, creating an entertaining and compelling concert experience.
Participating Artists:
Ruby Ibarra, LEX the Lexicon Artist (event producer), Chow Mane, and Rudy Kalma
Artist Bio:
LEX the Lexicon Artist is Taipei-raised, Oakland-based entertainer Alex Sun Liu. LEX combines frank storytelling, sharp commentary, and a comical ego to deliver the perspective of a third-culture Asian-American. LEX blends early 2000’s hip-hop, nerdy charisma, pop sensibility, and unrestrained energy, to tell the most irreverent stories possible.
