He realizes what a treasure he has! This is the life work of two of Chinatown’s pre-eminent photographers from the 1920s to the 1950s. They chronicled an immigrant people becoming American, while keeping their cultural traditions. The images show family portraits that have been artfully sliced together, the mother and children in China and the father laboring in the United States, separated because of the Chinese Exclusion Act; Cantonese opera stars in fantastical costumes striking heroic poses; and hand-painted portraits and stage backdrops. This story might have been lost forever, but now we are bringing it to you in our film: Trashed: The Lost World of May’s Photo Studio.Support us with your generous gift.
