Nancy Hom

Nancy Hom's experience as an immigrant, a mother, a community leader, and spiritual seeker provide the framework for her visual and literary pursuits. She is a multifaceted artist, writer, organizer, and arts administrator. Widely known for her silkscreen artwork, she has created images for numerous political, social, and community events. Nancy is also a children's book illustrator, a published author, and a graphic designer. She has been involved with Kearny Street Workshop, a San Francisco-based multidisciplinary Asian Pacific American arts organization, for 30 years and served as its Executive Director from 1995 to 2003. She is the mother of Nicole Hsiang, who is graduating from Wesleyan University, and wife of photographer Robert Hsiang.

Nancy Hom, an artist and writer, was introduced to the Asian American Movement in 1971 when she joined the Asian Media Collective and other groups in New York. Since 1974, Hom has been involved with Kearny Street Workshop, a San Francisco-based multi-disciplinary Asian American arts organization; she became its executive director in 1995, producing shows and exhibits that are relevant to minority communities.

In addition to her work at KSW, Nancy also lends her energy and expertise to other organizations, such as Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA), a San Francisco Bay Area based organization that nurtures, supports, and promotes Asian American women artists in the visual, literary and performing arts. She has been a member since AAWAA’s inception 15 years ago. Nancy is also a major contributor to Manilatown Heritage Foundation’s development. The Manilatown Heritage Foundation was formed in 1994 to advocate for the rebuilding of the International Hotel and the preservation of the Filipino legacy in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Besides being on the Advisory Board to Kearny Street Workshop, she is currently on the Board of the Asian American Women Artists Association, an Arts Advisory Committee member of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation, and a Board member of Clapperstick Institute/ Heyday Books. She also serves on the Community Arts Distribution Committee of the Zellerbach Family Foundation.

Nancy Hom recently retired from her position as executive director for the Kearny Street Workshop, the nation's oldest Asian Pacific American multi-disciplinary arts organization. A nationally recognized silk-screen artist, she has dedicated almost 30 years toward building the organization and its mission to empower the Asian Pacific American community through the arts. Hom brought the Chinese immigrant experience to national attention through her support of the Angel Island Project and has personally contributed to community murals around San Francisco.
