From protests on O’ahu, to speeches at the UN, to a case against the United States at the world court in the Hague, native Hawaiians have been rallying to the call of their Ancestors to take a stand for their nation and to speak out for their right to self-determination. Many songs have been written which memorialize these historical events. Other compositions address the desire by Hawaiians to let others know of their struggle, despite widespread confusion and controversy about how they should go about regaining some measure of their former sovereignty. Ka’ala will sing several selections and discuss their significance, in an effort to show solidarity with other native Hawaiians who also have dedicated themselves to the process of ensuring the continuity of Hawaiian culture for generations to come.
